Description
Students in most classrooms are different in many ways--gender, class, sexual preference, ethnic group, religion, nationality, language, ability, maturity, and so on. School is one of the primary means by which young people meet others who are different from themselves. As members of these groups may have conflicts with one another, teachers and administrators actively work to promote tolerance among these groups. Some are motivated to create inclusive classrooms in which diverse students learn to their fullest potential. Others seek to prepare their students to live in an increasingly diverse world, compelled by research in developmental psychology, educational psychology, and sociology indicating that the school years are crucial in forming children's responses to those who are different from themselves. For others, making diversity work is a central and sometimes explicit value espoused by their schools.
